PHAC/ Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine

Travel Health Notice: Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus causes swelling of the brain, and possible long-term nerve and brain damage. It is spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito and can be prevented with a vaccine.

There are two vaccines for JE approved for use in Canada, JE-VAX® (distributed by sanofi pasteur) and Ixiaro® (distributed by Novartis Vaccines).

Ixiaro®
On October 29, 2009, Health Canada issued its approval of the vaccine Ixiaro®, a new inactivated vaccine to protect against JE for use in persons 18 years of age and older.

JE-VAX®
JE-VAX® is no longer being produced and the supply in Canada is limited. The vaccine will be unavailable after May 2010. This is currently the only vaccine approved for use in children under 18 years old in Canada.
